Dog surrendered to Rescue because: Other
Other Reason: Ginger is a very sweet and loving dog. She is very friendly to all dogs and people. Very submissive. She came from an abusive home and had many issues when we received her. We have worked all her aggression issues with a professional trainer but we cannot trust her with small infant children as she mildly resource guards her food at meal time. She needs to be in a home with an adult(s) and children over 8 years old. Ginger loves women and children who are 8 years and older. She does not prefer men but will tolerate them with a little fear/suspicion. Ginger is a great house dog with no bad behaviors noted. We currently live in a small apartment and she does very very well.
Good With: other dogs, strangers, cats
Dog Likes: water, retrieving, car rides;
Working Ability: excellent
Working Comments: Ginger is a pleaser. She loves training and is excellent at it. She loves to play fetch. Her training needs to be consistent with normal frequency. She is fully trained in all basic obedience commands. She does very well with verbal commands and hand signals. No electronic collars as she was abused with one. She is not a hunting dog as she is gun shy.
Behavioral Problems:
Other Behavioral Problems: Mild resource guarding of food bowl at meal time. Low growling and snarl if you stoop down to her face level at meal time.
Bitten? Yes
Bite Explanation: I was told Ginger bit her two previous owners.
Commands known: Sit, Stay, Down, Come, Heel
Tricks: Ginger was abused with an electronic dog collar. Do not use one on her as she will regress to her fearful days.
Other Info: Great dog! Very sweet and loving. Very well behaved. Unfortunately Ginger lives in a fearful world due to abuse from previous owner. She does not like middle aged men. She fears them. She loves women and children. Ginger is always a happy dog until I work on her issues. Her only remaining issue is resource guarding of her food. This training makes her fearful due to her negative past. She does not lash out but does bare her teeth with a low growl. I am able to place my hand in her bowl and feed her by hand tasty scraps/treats during her meal time. I have made progress in this area. Her new owner needs to know not to pressure Ginger with negativity as she will regress to her abused puppy days. She is very sensitive and lacks trust. You need to go slow and win her trust. Ginger responds very well to positive reinforcement and is trainable in anything including her current resource guarding (food). I am making progress. I have spent $3000 in a professional trainer in removing her past aggression issues in resource guarding of random household items and kenneling. She is almost 100% there but my wife and I are having children and we cannot be completely sure about Ginger. She would be best in a home with a woman owner. Older children are a plus for Ginger.
