Dog surrendered to Rescue because: Too much to handle
Other Reason: I am almost 68 and have now both hips and both knees replaced. Three surgeries since August, one hip its sixth and has to be last time. Absolutely cannot fall so cannot deal with leash walking or in and out of car stuff anymore.
Good With: cats, kids
Dog Likes: water, retrieving, car rides;
Working Ability: unknown
Working Comments: She could learn most anything, with training by a knowledgeable person. A demon retreiver...of balls, on land or in the water.
Behavioral Problems: other problems
Other Behavioral Problems: Generally high strung even a bit anxious, and enormous energy. Hard to pet, gets way too excited. Pogo-ing. Goes crazy when on leash seeing other dogs. Off leash still not easygoing with other dogs. Was one of three and was fine with other family visitor dogs she knew, but then solo for two years. Now has a friend and playmate dog (Pyrynees) next door. She went through a car and bike chasing phase with a naughty pal when age two, but has not had opportunity since then.
Bitten? Yes
Bite Explanation: At age 3 Tekla had to cope with my husband dying, and two years her older Chessie companion as well. Soon after that we moved. During the comings and goings leading up to the sale, she nipped a radon contractor as he came in the front door. He put his face down to her for a kiss...she nipped the side of his face just enough to draw blood. Then we lived in a camper on the construction site of e new house and she got bossy about all the guys coming and going and nipped a couple of them on their pants. After we were moved in, a friend of mine visited. We met her by the front door, and everything was fine but she put out her hand and Tekla gave her a bruising hard bite but no blood. She is both ptotective and somewhat fearful, i think. She does not like strangers approaching her close. Also it upsets her if strangers try to talk all friendly. Acter that I persevered, got much advice, controlled her space, worked with her a lot and continue to manage her carefully with being properly introduced to new people. She is much more socialized now, but i am not casual. We have had no nipping for nearly two years. Various people, male, female, adults, and children are on her known and OK list after being properly introduced.
Commands known: Sit, Stay, Down, Come
Tricks: She likes the long down with several treats thrown around and she will find them all starting with the last one. She can sit and obey "wait" to go out the door, to retreive. She can do a down and wait for command to take a treat that is placed between her paws three inches from her nose. She can follow my pointing to help her locate a ball. Last summer she understood my voice and arm gestures to go very far around the outside of her fence to retreive several list balls that were in the farm field for a long time. She know "bring" and can figure out to go get some item from another room.
Other Info: She comes from great bloodlines and is very smart. She can learn object words and names of people and animals. She is healthy and powerful and not a bit "senior". She is an awesome swimmer though she will not go off a dock, only from the shore...does not like going all the way under.
