Dog surrendered to Rescue because: Other
Other Reason: Mason is very protective of our children and we are in a setting where people are in and out of the house a lot. As heartbreaking as it is for us we would like to rehome him to prevent an unwanted incident from ever occurring.
Good With: other dogs, kids
Dog Likes: water, retrieving, car rides;
Working Ability: unknown
Working Comments: Mason is great with general obedience commands. He has not been trained to hunt, but has been around hunters and is not gun shy.
Behavioral Problems: other problems
Other Behavioral Problems: A worker entered our fenced back yard without permission and Mason jumped up on him, tearing his shirt and scratching his side.
Bitten? No
Bite Explanation: See above
Commands known: Sit, Stay, Down, Come, Heel, Bathroom
Tricks: Mason rings a bell when he needs to go outside. He is an excellent loose leash walker. Walked by my 86 year old dad and also my 7 year old son. He is also great off leash. He can shake/ high five, and loves to play hide and go seek with the children.
Other Info: Mason is a wonderful chessie. He is settled enough to be an incredible companion in the home- at my side when going about daily activities, curled up next to me while patiently waiting for a walk, but active enough to enjoy running through the woods or retrieving on the beach. His only flaw is that he is overly protective of the children in our family. When a stranger approaches he is very protective. Once he knows someone he will greet them warmly and settle down next to them while they visit. When taken out of our home situation and away from the children these overprotective tendencies are not seen by the trainer. I think Mason would thrive in an environment where he is with his person/ people most of the day and has space to run and play. Perhaps a home without young children would remove the burden of protecting from perceived threats. We have carefully introduced him to doggy playmates and he really looks forward to time with these canine friends. He is such a sweet boy and it is really important to us to find him the right home.
