Dog surrendered to Rescue because: Turned over by shelter

Good With:
  • Strangers
Dog Likes:
  • Water
  • Retrieving
  • Hunting
  • Car Rides
Working Ability:
Working Comments: When we first took Bruce into rescue, he did not know how to swim or anything about retrieving. We felt that he had no chance at being a hunt prospect at all. He does keep improving every day and so now we can say that he loves to swim and he loves to retrieve but he is not yet bringing it back to hand. So at this point, we cannot rule out that he may also be a possible hunt prospect. He has a lot of energy and is a very strong and active dog. MARCH 13 2017 UPDATE: Okay - Bruce is growing up quickly and he would be a great hunting project. He absolutely loves swimming and retrieving and he has a huge prey drive. He is not gunshy. So - with a little training over the summer, by next fall you would have a great hunting companion.
Behavioral Problems:
Other Behavioral Problems: In the beginning, Bruce would growl and lunge at some strangers, especially men. Now, he is greeting strangers with a wagging tail and either accepts them immediately or takes only a few minutes to warm up to them. He generally likes the women that he meets. Thankfully, we were able to get him and begin his rehabilitation before he got any kind of a bite history. Once he knows you and knows that he will not be hit or hurt - he is super affectionate and loving. MARCH 13,2017 UPDATE: Bruce has shown absolutely no human aggression at all since his first week with us. He now just wants to be a big lapdog and loves everyone.
Bitten? No
Bite Explanation:
Commands known:
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Come
Tricks: Bruce has been learning his commands and is a quick study. He is good with sit and the recall command and is working on the others. We have had him about two and a half weeks.
Other Info: Bruce came to us from a shelter who said he was too aggressive to adopt to the public. He was supposed to be a three year old and instead we found an 18 month old pup that was scared to death to be at that shelter and was in total preservation mode. Now that he has settled in, he is turning into a wonderful dog! He is going to be huge as he has a huge feet and the vet said that he has a lot of growing left to do. Bruce was apparently abused as he would flinch and flatten if you moved your hand too quickly above his head. He is beginning to trust us now and is less likely to worry about being hit. This youngster just needs someone that is willing to continue to build his trust in humans again. He is retrieving bumpers and having a wonderful time running with his foster dad's 4 wheeler and learning how much fun life as a chessie can be. He is doing ok with the resident male and female chessies - though he does prefer his own eating space and does feel the need to protect his food and toys. This is one of the areas that we are working on and it will only get better. We are just getting to where we feel it is appropriate to start looking for the right home for Bruce. He would likely prefer a home where he is the only dog or with a submissive dog. He also needs someone that will continue to provide him with daily challenges, obedience work, exercise, and mental stimulation. He is really a smart and amazing dog -- he just has never had the chance to love and bond with a human until now. So we will be very picky about the home that he goes to. We did not list that he is good with kids as we want to be further along with his giving up his toys in case a young one would try to take something from him. But - if you are interested in having a young male that is going to give you back double what you put into him - then Bruce may be your guy. We are looking for experienced chessie owners due to his past experiences. But this boy has progressed so far and is so loving once he trusts you - we are all hopeful that he will be one heck of a success story with the right home. You can also see more pictures and updates on Bruce (originally named Kabul by the shelter) at our Facebook page at North Central Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief & Rescue. MARCH 13, 2017 UPDATE: Bruce is an awesome dog. But - he would be best as the only dog as he has started scuffles with the resident female chessie (who is very laid back). There has always been food involved, but we would rather be safe than sorry. It isn't that he lunges to attack another dog that he sees - we just want to protect any resident dogs from getting injured. Bruce also has decided that chasing cats is a very fun hobby so we will not place him in a home with a cat. But - if you are looking for a hunting companion by day and a lapdog by night - he just might be your guy. Bruce is a stunning looking young dog - he just needs the right home to love him and do lots of fun chessie things with him.
