Dog surrendered to Rescue because: Other
Other Reason: Owner surrender, no time to work with dog.
Good With:
  • Strangers
  • Children
Dog Likes:
  • Water
  • Retrieving
  • Hunting
  • Car Rides
Working Ability:
Working Comments: He does ok on leash with pinch collar but pulls with a regular collar, he needs frequent reminders to stay at heel with both types. He is e-collar wise. He yaps and whines when put in his crate and left alone in the garage but quiets down after a little while and sleeps all night without making a sound. When he first came here he would jump up on doors if left outside, but that has been corrected and hasn’t been happening in the past few days. Since I have been spending time and working with him, mostly on obedience, he listens to me, he mostly ignores commands from my wife.
Behavioral Problems:
  • Separation Anxiety
Other Behavioral Problems: Does not do well with dominant dogs, ok with submissive dogs. Not good with cats or chickens due to high prey drive. He has been physically abused. He winces if you reach to pet him on the head. Yelling makes him curl up and cower on the ground and he will not move. He will also cower or try to crawl under something if I have anything in my hand and raise it near him as he apparently thinks he is going to get hit.
Bitten? No
Bite Explanation:
Commands known:
  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Down
  • Come
  • Heel
Tricks: Casual hunting dog all his life.
Other Info: Koda is very sweet, he is submissive to people and has shown zero aggression toward me, my spouse, or our 11 & 13 y.o. kids, and my son can be boisterous playing with the dogs. He likes to ride in cars and will load inside, or into a pick-up bed, on command. He is quiet and calm inside a vehicle. He retrieves on command. He is not gun shy. He is very birdy, he watches birds in the air and can’t stop thinking about our chickens. He is very attached to people, he won’t run away or go out of sight. He loves being petted by children. He does not guard any part of his body. He has a soft mouth and readily gives up what is in his mouth. He learned the command crate in two days - he just doesn’t like it. He has had obedience training, but it needs a lot of refreshing. He was left alone in a yard with little interaction and his prior owner only used three commands: “heel” meant come, heel, and sit; the other two were stay and fetch it up. He does not seem to know the command “no”, I guess they just told him to heel to get him to leave something alone. He lacks socialization: he will give a single woof alert when he sees other people when out on walks, he barks at motorcycles, he tries to ignore strangers, he is dominate and can be very aggressive to other dogs. He is not a dog I would ever think about taking to a dog park.
