Alumni Ranger has passed away

from Rangers Daddy, Erik

On Friday, I had to say goodbye to my beloved Ranger, my loyal companion and the best dog I could ever hope for. At 13 and a half years old, I knew he was living on borrowed time, but the reality of his absence is no less profound.

Ranger had been struggling with walking for some time, but his incredible spirit never wavered. On Friday night, after coming back inside and settling into his bed, something changed. He suddenly couldn’t get up, and it was clear he had lost control of his legs. The emergency vet confirmed that he had likely lost feeling due to back issues that finally gave way. True to his resilient nature, Ranger enjoyed a bone on the way to the clinic.

Letting him go was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, even though it was the right one. Ranger brought so much joy, love, and companionship to my life. Like most Chessies, he was rarely more than a step away from me, and the house feels unbearably empty without him.

I’ll always cherish the memories we shared—his love for exploring the yard, his excitement as he opened presents, and the quiet comfort of his presence at my side. He truly was a gift, and I hope I gave him the life his original owners envisioned for him when they entrusted him to me.

Ranger, you were the very best, and I hope you’re running free now, unburdened by pain, with that same joy and curiosity that made you so special.

Rest easy, my sweet boy.
